Local Motors co-creation model Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Local Motors co-creation model - Case Study Example Moreover the design talent is easy to identify but not all the designs are easy to develop and build them into new cars. On the other hand, the pro of this co-creation model is that it enables LM to come up with a new way of thinking in the car industry, which is â€Å"Design by the crowd, built by the customer†. Furthermore, microfactories, which have been built around USA and where cars are manufactured, can be optimal places for the customers and LM to cooperate and coordinate. Built by the customer is Local Motors’ community-oriented marketing strategy. LM also wants to encourage customers to bring their family and friends during the building of their car to not only give a customer-friendly and personal touch to the process but also to lessen the work load of LM staffs. However, the disadvantage with this process is that many potential customers might not have the â€Å"time or the enthusiasm about cars to spend weekends cooped up in a factory† (Norton and D ann, 2011). This innovative strategy has attracted many new customers and car enthusiastic to follow and be part of the community. 2.  How did the co-creation model unfold in practice? The central to Local Motor's co-creation model in practice is attracting a robust set of both professional and amateur car designers who could design the cars that LM would build. In that direction, LM along with its contractors began work to build an online community in which designers can post their car designs or design concepts, as well as suggest and collaborate on others' designs.

Air pollution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Air pollution - Essay Example From this research it is clear that air pollution has become a major environmental health problem affecting both developed and developing countries throughout the world. The consequence has been that air pollution is causing human health problems as well as damage to vegetation, crops, wildlife, materials, buildings and even the climate. In the U.S., the largest sources of air pollution, in order of importance, are: 1) transportation, mainly automobiles and trucks; 2) electric power plants that bum coal or oil; and 3) industry, for which the major sources include steel mills, metal smelters, oil refineries, and paper mills. The most common air pollution problem resulting from these emission sources is ground-level ozone (O3), According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), non-attainment of EPA requirements for O3 is the most common air pollution problem facing large cities in the U.S. It is estimated that, 160 million people in the U.S. lived in areas that are in non-attainment of healthful O3 levels (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD]. In the past, efforts to reduce air pollution have consisted primarily of "command and control" programs that involve enforcement of government regulations designed to reduce toxic emissions. Such programs have proven highly effective in reducing industrial, point source pollution and causing auto manufacturers to produce cleaner burning automobiles.... The stratospheric level of the earth's atmosphere lies directly above the troposphere, which extends from sea level to approximately 8-9 miles above the earth's surface. It is in the troposphere that nearly all forms of life on earth reside. Within the stratosphere lies a highly concentrated level of ozone, commonly referred to as the ozone layer. The highest concentrations of O3 within the stratosphere occur between 11-15 miles above the earth's surface. This stratospheric ozone layer is essential to the maintenance of life on earth, protecting the earth's inhabitants from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation (Buchholz 1). Thus, free of human interference, the stratospheric ozone layer is continually maintaining a dynamic equilibrium between ozone production and ozone destruction that maintains the earth's protective ozone layer. While O3 also occurs naturally in very small amounts at ground level in the troposphere, in urban areas throughout the U.S., tropospheric O3 levels are rising to unhealthful levels (Buchholz 1). In affected urban areas, O3 air pollution reaches its highest level between the months of May and September when temperatures are high and sunlight abundant. O3 forms at ground level when volatile organic compounds (VOC's) combine with nitrogen dioxides (NOx) in the presence of heat and light (Buchholz 1). NOx is formed via the burning of fossil fuels at high temperatures, and is the primary precursor to O3, NOx and VOC's, are emitted into the air by motor vehicles, electrical power plants and other industrial plants. Because the O3 molecule is highly reactive, it acts as a powerful oxidant. Consequently, ground-level ozone negatively affects human

Quantitative Research Statistics Project Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6500 words

Quantitative Research - Statistics Project Example There are many different research designs that can be used by individuals asking research questions in LIS contexts, all of which provide credible evidence for improving practice. Qualitative approaches have been used in library and information settings to assess patron perceptions about library services, to examine the effectiveness of information literacy strategies and to address a host of other questions related to library and information work. In addition, a number of qualitatively based textual approaches (such as critical theory and discourse analysis) have been used to assess policy documents and organizational discourses, the construction of classification systems, and other questions that require an exploration of textual forms of data. Increasingly, researchers are also using these approaches in conjunction with one another (i.e. a "mixed methods" approach) to give a more complete picture of the state of LIS practice; for example, a recent study of mature university studen ts used qualitative interviews with students in conjunction with a textual discourse analysis of campus texts, as well as a manipulation of quantitative census data, to provide a broad contextual picture of students' academic information behaviors. In order to focus this discussion on qualitative research, in particular, it is necessary to draw lines between these different paradigms and to then examine qualitative work in more detail. However, it is important to note that research paradigms are quite fluid, and that many researchers are now trying to expand beyond a single approach to obtain the best possible evidence. The nature of qualitative resea

How does Alcohol Affect Crime in the United States Essay

How does Alcohol Affect Crime in the United States - Essay Example From this discussion it is clear that  there are some crimes mostly related to alcohol consumption. Homicide, rape, burglary, theft, robbery, child abuse, road accidents, Domestic violence, Teens pregnancy, suicides e.t.c are all crimes, arguably having alcohol as a factor in their committal. Since addressing crime alone, by apprehending the criminal is not likely to succeed in reducing the acts of crime, then the root cause and the motivation behind the committal of criminal activities needs to be addressed. Among all crime related activities reported to the police in 2009, 43 % were found to have been committed by individuals who had previously consumed alcohol. This paper stresses that  consumption of alcohol is likely to result to wrong doings that are offensive and punishable by law, for example, drunken driving.   Battery is another sort crime well related with alcohol consumption, where an individual who is under the influence of alcohol engages in physical assault to mem bers of t heir families or their partners. Among all the reported crimes in the US in the year 2009, cases of battery accounted for 36% of all the reported crime. This is an indication that individuals under the influence of alcohol have a higher chance of assaulting their partners or their family members, more than engage in committing any other alcohol related crime.... There are some crimes mostly related to alcohol consumption. Homicide, rape, burglary, theft, robbery, child abuse, road accidents, Domestic violence, Teens pregnancy, suicides e.t.c are all crimes, arguably having alcohol as a factor in their committal (Michael, 171). Since addressing crime alone, by apprehending the criminal is not likely to succeed in reducing the acts of crime, then the root cause and the motivation behind the committal of criminal activities needs to be addressed. Among all crime related activities reported to the police in 2009, 43 % were found to have been committed by individuals who had previously consumed alcohol (Michael, 314). With such backgrounds, then I present my claim that to address crime in America, the US government already pay much attention on regulating alcohol consumption, but it is not effective. This is because, many underage are still being involved in alcohol consumption, alcohol related violence and offences are still on the rise and dome stic violence with alcoholic perpetrators is still rife (Michael, 172). Hence, I will propose that US government should devise legislations and policies that would effectively eliminate minor involvement in alcohol consumption. Furthermore, the government should introduce social programs that address alcohol consumption, through engaging the alcohol consumers to seminars and workshops, which will play a great role in minimizing the number of alcohol consumers. Consumption of alcohol is likely to result to wrong doings that are offensive and punishable by law, for example, drunken driving. Battery is another sort crime well related with alcohol consumption, where an individual who is under the influence of alcohol engages in physical assault to

Employing Heuristics Essay Example for Free

Employing Heuristics Essay A heuristic is an informal and usually a quick solution to a problem. These quick solutions or strategies are based on one’s experiences in dealing with problems and in things that are related to that problem. In can be represented by the idiomatic expression â€Å"rules of thumb’ or in simpler terms, common sense, educated guesses, or judgments based on intuition (Kahneman, 1982, p. 39). That having been defined, we can say that the boss’s reaction was as it was due to his limited knowledge of the inner workings of a Volvo car. The only thing he knows about Volvos is based on the experience his brother-in-law had with a certain car of the same brand. That experience being negative, it is inevitable for the boss to react negatively as well. One possible way to sway the boss’s perception of the vehicle is to make him see and experience the vehicle for himself and prove that his perception of the car is wrong. Give him a first hand experience of the car since what he knows about the car is based only on second hand knowledge. Let him inspect the car for himself. Give him a ride in it. Let him drive it. However, his idea of the car may already be corrupted and he may already have formed biases regarding it. This will greatly affect his judgment of it. A way to avoid this may be to conceal the brand of the car to him at first. This will prevent his biases from clouding his judgment. Once he has made his unbiased decision regarding the vehicle, that’s when the brand of the car may be revealed to him. If the likes the performance of the car, he will be surprised to find out that it was a Volvo. If not, he’d probably have this I-told-you-so attitude. Now that you’ve got your boss’s attention, maybe its time you told him about more details regarding the Volvo; about its features and about what sets it apart from a the others. The Volvo Group, a Swedish Company, supplies not only cars but trucks, busses, construction equipments and various transport solutions as well. With this variation, we can say that the company knows what they are doing with regard to vehicles. They’ve been around since April 14, 1927, founded at Gothenburg City. In 1999, the car division of the company was sold to Ford which is an even more reputable car manufacturer. An example of a luxury car under the company brand is the S80 luxury sedan car which presented a new idea of what luxury cars should be. It has superb luxury features which make its looks stand out among other cars. Its engine is created with an advanced technology and can be expected to perform the way modern cars should. And of course, the feature that the brand has been known for, comfort and safety, is something that Volvos can truly be proud of. Safety always comes first anyway. Some more features that the car can boast is its consoles like digital climate controls and the Dolby Pro-Logic II/Dynaudio surround sound system which increases the level of its being a luxury car. t also has stylishly shaped headlamps, soft exterior body curves, and warm color tones which are all made from high quality materials. Its most unique feature, with its state of the art security systems, is the adaptice cruise control with collision warning and brake support. This feature warns the driver of impending collisions and can prevent severe accidents from happening. This is just one car from the brand. We can be sure to expect no less from the other models they manufacture.
